THE FORMAT

What is iXBRL and why is it required?

Inline XBRL (iXBRL) combines a human-readable HTML document with machine-readable tags on its financial facts. People can read the accounts while receiving systems can identify the tagged figures. Requirements differ between the Company Tax Return package sent to HMRC and accounts filed separately with Companies House.

HMRC: the Company Tax Return package

Online company returns include the CT600, accounts and computations. Accounts and computations generally must be in iXBRL, subject to specified exceptions. Read HMRC’s COTAX manual, COM60040.

Companies House: announced 2028 change

From 1 April 2028, companies must file accounts in iXBRL using commercial software; Companies House says its web and paper accounts-filing services will close. Read the Companies House announcement.

Requirements and announcement checked October 2026.

FROM FIGURES TO DOCUMENTS

How does WeFile turn your figures into iXBRL?

Enter or import your financial figures, choose the applicable accounts presentation and review the results. WeFile maps supported accounts and computation facts to taxonomy tags; you do not select individual tags yourself. Reconciliation and other built-in checks help identify issues before submission, but cannot guarantee acceptance.

  1. Enter or import your figures

Enter the trial balance figures manually or import them from Xero, QuickBooks Online, FreeAgent or a supported CSV file. Review the resulting profit and loss and balance-sheet entries.

  2. Choose the applicable account type

Select FRS 105 micro-entity, FRS 102 Section 1A small-company, full FRS 102 or dormant accounts, as appropriate for the company and reporting period.

  3. Generate the tagged documents

WeFile maps each supported profit and loss and balance-sheet line to the relevant accounts taxonomy concepts, using the FRS 102 taxonomy for accounts and the CT computational taxonomy for tax computations. You do not choose tags manually.

  4. Review reconciliation and checks

Check that the profit and loss account and balance sheet reconcile before filing, and review the other built-in checks. Passing checks does not guarantee that a submission will be accepted.

  5. Approve and submit

Record director approval and review the documents, then submit the CT600 with iXBRL accounts and computations to HMRC and, where supported, file the accounts separately with Companies House.

TWO DESTINATIONS

Can I file the CT600 and iXBRL accounts in one workflow?

Yes, for supported company and accounts types. The same entered figures feed the CT600, iXBRL tax computation and iXBRL accounts. You review the generated documents before submission. HMRC receives the Company Tax Return package, while Companies House receives a separate accounts filing; one workflow does not merge their legal obligations.

Know the scope before filing

WeFile cannot electronically file CIC accounts, accounts prepared under the Charities SORP or audited accounts to Companies House. Charity and CASC CT600E returns have a CT600-only workflow. See what our CT600 software supports.

PRESENTATION MATTERS

FRS 105 vs FRS 102: what’s different for iXBRL filing?

Your accounting standard determines how figures and disclosures appear in the accounts and which taxonomy concepts apply. FRS 105 offers a simpler micro-entity presentation; qualifying small companies can use FRS 102 Section 1A. The comparison below concerns presentation, not whether a company meets the statutory size and eligibility tests.

PUBLISHED PRODUCT DETAILS

How does WeFile compare with other iXBRL software?

Compare the published platform, filing scope and pricing models rather than treating any one product as universally suitable. Andica describes separate CT600 and Accounts Production products; Easy Digital Filing lists a Companies House add-on. WEFILE PRICING

What does filing with WeFile cost?

WeFile charges per supported filing rather than requiring an annual plan for an individual return. The dormant and trading examples below use current public prices when available. COMMON QUESTIONS

What else should I know about iXBRL accounts software?

iXBRL requirements depend on the document, filing destination and company circumstances. These answers cover common questions about tagging, HMRC submissions, Companies House changes and WeFile’s supported accounts. They are general guidance: confirm the rules for your company and review each document before submitting it.

Inline XBRL combines a document people can read with machine-readable tags identifying its financial facts. The applicable tags depend on the accounts, taxonomy version and reporting context.
Online Company Tax Returns include the CT600, accounts and computations. HMRC says the accounts and computations generally must be in iXBRL, with specified exceptions.
No. For supported accounts, WeFile maps the figures and disclosures you enter to the relevant iXBRL taxonomy concepts. You remain responsible for checking the underlying figures and documents.
For supported companies, WeFile prepares the CT600, iXBRL accounts and tax computation from the same figures. The HMRC Company Tax Return package and Companies House accounts remain separate submissions.
FRS 105 is the micro-entity standard and has a simpler presentation with limited disclosures; it does not permit fair value accounting. FRS 102 Section 1A applies to qualifying small companies and generally requires more detail. Eligibility depends on the applicable rules, not just turnover.
HMRC says accounts and computations accompanying online Company Tax Returns generally must be in iXBRL, subject to specified exceptions. A PDF is not a general substitute for the required iXBRL documents.
Companies House has announced that accounts must be filed in iXBRL using commercial software from 1 April 2028, when its web and paper accounts-filing services will close. Small and micro companies will also have to file a profit and loss account, with an option to prevent its publication.
Yes, WeFile supports dormant-company accounts and a nil CT600 where a Company Tax Return is required. Whether HMRC requires a CT600 depends on whether it has issued a notice to deliver that has not been withdrawn.
WeFile does not electronically file CIC accounts, accounts prepared under the Charities SORP or audited accounts to Companies House. Charity and CASC CT600E filings use a CT600-only workflow.
No. Built-in checks can identify some issues but cannot guarantee acceptance by HMRC or Companies House. Review the figures, documents, eligibility and submission results, and seek professional advice where needed.
