Filing a VAT return through WeFile

5 min read

Filing your VAT return via WeFile is designed to be intuitive and strictly compliant with MTD regulations. Follow these steps to submit your return.

Selecting an Open Obligation

Navigate to your company's VAT dashboard and identify the open obligation you wish to file. Click 'File Return' next to the corresponding period to launch the VAT return wizard.

Entering the 9 VAT Boxes

You will be presented with the standard 9-box VAT format. Enter your figures carefully. Ensure you are transferring the exact calculations from your digital accounting records. WeFile provides helper text next to each box to remind you what should be included (e.g., Box 1 for VAT due on sales, Box 4 for VAT reclaimed on purchases).

Flat Rate Scheme

If your company uses the VAT Flat Rate Scheme, you can toggle this option at the top of the form. This will dynamically adjust the helper text to reflect the simplified calculation method, guiding you to fill primarily Boxes 1, 4 (if capital expenditure applies), and 6.

Reviewing Totals

As you input your figures, WeFile automatically calculates Box 3 (Total VAT due) and Box 5 (Net VAT to pay/reclaim). Review these automated totals against your own records to ensure mathematical accuracy before proceeding.

Submission and Confirmation

After a final review, click 'Submit to HMRC'. WeFile will transmit your 9-box data securely. Within seconds, HMRC will process the return. Once accepted, you will receive an immediate confirmation, a unique HMRC receipt number, and the obligation status will update to 'Fulfilled'. You can view your submission history at any time from the VAT dashboard.
