Direct Amendment Filing: Amend Your CT600 and Companies House Returns Without the Original Filing

WeFile Team·12 June 2026·8 min read

Filing a corporation tax return is rarely a one-and-done affair. Whether you've discovered an error in your CT600 after submission, received new information that changes your figures, or simply need to revise a balance sheet entry, amendments are a fact of life for UK companies and their accountants.

Until now, making amendments through WeFile required locating the original filing first. Today, we're excited to announce Direct Amendment Filing — a streamlined way to file amended CT600 returns and Companies House accounts without needing to reference a previous filing in the system.

This feature is ideal for companies that originally filed through another provider, or for situations where the original submission isn't stored in WeFile. Let's walk through everything you need to know.

What Is a Direct Amendment?

A direct amendment is an amended CT600 corporation tax return and/or Companies House accounts filing that is created independently — without linking to an existing filing record in WeFile.

Previously, to file an amendment through WeFile, you needed to have the original filing already in the system. You would open that filing, click "Create Amendment", and the wizard would pre-populate your data. While that workflow is still available and recommended when the original filing exists, the new direct amendment flow removes that dependency entirely.

With direct amendments, you can:

  • File amended returns for companies that originally filed through a different provider
  • Submit corrections for periods where the original filing was completed outside of WeFile
  • Create standalone amendment filings without searching for or importing previous submissions

How It Works

Creating a direct amendment is straightforward and uses the same powerful multi-step wizard you're already familiar with:

  1. Start a new filing — From your dashboard or the filings page, click the "New Filing" button and select the "Amendment" option.
  2. Select your company — Choose the company you need to file an amendment for from your registered companies list.
  3. Choose the accounting period — Select the accounting period that the amendment relates to.
  4. Complete the wizard — Walk through the familiar steps: account type selection, profit & loss, balance sheet, and review. All the same intelligent calculations (corporation tax, marginal relief, capital allowances) apply.
  5. Submit — Your amended return is submitted directly to HMRC and/or Companies House, clearly marked as an amendment in both the iXBRL accounts and the CT600 XML.

The entire process takes just a few minutes, and the wizard handles all the complex formatting requirements that HMRC and Companies House expect for amended filings.

Full Integration with iXBRL and PDF Reports

One of the most important aspects of filing amendments is ensuring the documents are correctly marked. Both HMRC and Companies House have specific requirements for how amended accounts should be presented.

WeFile's direct amendment feature fully integrates with our iXBRL generation engine and PDF report builder:

  • iXBRL accounts automatically include the correct amendment indicators and revised report metadata, ensuring compliance with Companies House filing requirements
  • PDF reports clearly show "AMENDED" status throughout, so there's no ambiguity about the nature of the filing
  • CT600 XML submissions to HMRC are properly flagged as amendments, with the correct submission type codes
  • Tax computations reflect the amended figures with full recalculation of corporation tax liability, including marginal relief where applicable

This means you don't need to worry about manually adjusting any technical details — WeFile handles the compliance formatting automatically.

When Should You Use Direct Amendments?

Direct amendments are particularly useful in several common scenarios:

1. Switching from Another Provider

If your company previously filed through TaxCalc, TaxFiler, or any other software, and you now need to amend that return, you can do so directly through WeFile without importing the original filing.

2. Correcting Errors Discovered After Filing

Perhaps your accountant identified a misclassified expense, or you received a revised invoice that affects your profit and loss figures. A direct amendment lets you submit the corrected return quickly.

3. HMRC Compliance Checks

If HMRC has queried your return and you need to submit revised figures, the direct amendment workflow makes it easy to file the corrected CT600 with the updated numbers.

4. Voluntary Amendments

Companies have 12 months from the filing deadline to amend their corporation tax return. If you discover an error or omission within that window, a direct amendment is the simplest path to correction.

Direct Amendment vs. Linked Amendment

WeFile now supports two amendment workflows. Here's how they compare:

Both workflows produce identical output — properly formatted, fully compliant amendment filings. The only difference is how you start the process.

What Happens After You Submit?

Once your direct amendment is submitted, it follows the same processing pipeline as any other WeFile filing:

  • Real-time status tracking — Monitor your submission status directly from the filing detail page, with live updates as HMRC and Companies House process your return
  • Document downloads — Access your amended iXBRL accounts, CT600 PDF, and tax computation documents at any time
  • Submission history — The full submission timeline is recorded, giving you a complete audit trail
  • Email confirmations — Receive email notifications when your amended filing is accepted

Your amended filing appears in your filings list with a clear "Amendment" badge, making it easy to distinguish from original filings.
