Common filing errors and how to fix them

6 min read

Unbalanced Balance Sheet

This is the single most common error. Ensure that your 'Total Net Assets' exactly matches your 'Total Capital and Reserves'. Even a £1 discrepancy will prevent submission. Double check that you haven't forgotten to include your estimated Corporation Tax liability as a creditor.

Missing or Incorrect UTR

Your 10-digit Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) is strictly required. Double-check the number entered against official HMRC correspondence. Ensure you haven't accidentally entered your Company Registration Number or VAT number instead.

Validation Errors / Invalid Characters

If the system flags a validation error, carefully review the specific field mentioned. Often, this is caused by entering letters or currency symbols (£) where only numerical digits are accepted, or leaving mandatory fields completely blank.

Period Mismatch Errors

If you receive an error about dates, ensure your accounting period in WeFile matches the dates expected by Companies House and HMRC. If you recently shortened your period, wait 24 hours for the government systems to sync before trying to file.
