Understanding the iXBRL format

4 min read

What is iXBRL?

iXBRL (Inline eXtensible Business Reporting Language) is a digital reporting standard. It takes a standard human-readable document (like an HTML page showing your accounts) and embeds hidden, machine-readable 'tags' around every financial figure and structural element.

Why HMRC Requires It

HMRC and Companies House legally require all Company Tax Returns and annual accounts to be submitted in iXBRL format. This allows their automated systems to instantly parse, validate, and analyze your financial data without human data entry.

How WeFile Generates It

Generating valid iXBRL is a highly complex technical process. WeFile abstracts this completely. As you fill out our simple, plain-English wizard, our engine works in the background to automatically apply the correct taxonomy tags to every single figure.

The Downloaded File

After your filing is generated, you can download a copy of the iXBRL document for your records. If you open it in a standard web browser, it will look like a normal webpage displaying your accounts. The hidden XML tags are strictly for the government's computers.

Verification

Before submission, WeFile rigorously validates the generated iXBRL against the official government taxonomies to ensure zero formatting errors. You don't need to verify the code yourself; if WeFile generated it, it is guaranteed to be compliant.
