Filing dormant accounts to HMRC

Hi,

My company has not traded yet. Should I file dormant accounts to HMRC besides Companies House? I have not activated corporation tax either. I am not sure how it works if I should file...

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to us. This is a very common question, and we're happy to clarify how dormant companies should file.

  1. Filing with Companies House and HMRC:
    • You are correct that dormant accounts need to be filed with Companies House.
    • For HMRC, even a dormant company typically still needs to file a Company Tax Return (CT600). While there might be no tax to pay, HMRC still requires a return to confirm this. The only exceptions are if HMRC has specifically told you that you do not need to file a CT600 for a particular period, which is rare for newly incorporated companies.
  2. What is a Dormant Company for Filing?
    • A company is considered dormant if it has had no significant transactions during the accounting period. Significant transactions exclude fees paid to Companies House, late filing penalties, and payments for shares when the company was incorporated.
    • If your company has had any other activity, such as bank charges, earned interest, paid for a domain name, or purchased any inventory, it would generally not be considered dormant for tax purposes and would need to file full accounts and a CT600.
  3. Corporation Tax Activation:
    • HMRC is automatically notified when a company is incorporated. They expect a CT600 to be filed for each accounting period, even if you haven't actively "activated" corporation tax.

At WeFile, we have a simplified flow for dormant companies. If your company genuinely meets the dormant criteria:

  • You can select the "Dormant Company" option during the filing wizard. This will guide you through a much simpler process to prepare both the dormant accounts for Companies House and a nil CT600 for HMRC.

We recommend starting a new filing through your dashboard. If you toggle the "Dormant Company" switch, you'll see how streamlined the process becomes.

If you're unsure whether your company qualifies as dormant, or if you have any further questions during the filing process, please don't hesitate to open a support ticket from your dashboard, and we'll be glad to assist.

Thanks for the prompt response. I remember receiving the UTR activation code letter, but I did not enter it to my Government Gateway account. In thise case, I should request a new code, right?

Hello,

Thank you for the follow-up question.

What you will need for filing the CT600 with HMRC through WeFile are two main pieces of information:

  1. Your company's 10-digit UTR (which you mentioned you have).

  2. Your HMRC Government Gateway User ID and Password. This is your personal login for the HMRC online services. If you haven't set up a Government Gateway account for your company's Corporation Tax, or if you've forgotten your login details, you would need to retrieve or set these up directly with HMRC.

If your Government Gateway account was not activated, you should request a new activation code from HMRC on your account. Otherwise, HMRC will display credential errors for your filing due to the fact that your account is not active for corporation tax returns.

If you encounter any specific issues with your Government Gateway details during the filing process, please let us know by raising a support ticket from your dashboard, and we'll guide you on the next steps.
